Savour the Field: Au cœur du champ – A Celebration of Food, Land, and Community

Eastern Ontario came alive this August with Savour the Field: Au cœur du champ, an Indigenous farm-to-table culinary journey hosted at Springfield Farm Organics in Apple Hill. The event brought together community members, food lovers, and partners for a truly memorable weekend.

The noon seating sold out, with guests filling long tables set in a welcoming sit-where-you-like style that encouraged people to meet new faces and connect with their community. Surrounded by a picturesque farm view, guests enjoyed a soulful meal of traditional Indigenous recipes prepared by Chef Jonathan Lazore. Adding to the unique atmosphere, the chefs personally presented each dish as it was served, sharing stories and context that enriched the dining experience.

Music by Alanna Sterling created a vibrant backdrop, blending familiar favourites with original songs, while venue organic farmer Eleanor McGrath offered a short tour of Springfield Farm after the meal. For many guests, it was not only a delicious afternoon but also an educational introduction to Indigenous foods and sustainable farming practices.

“Our goal was to create something more than a meal,” said Eric Collard, EOAN’s Executive Director. “It was about bringing people together, connecting with food traditions, and celebrating the land we all share. Seeing people laugh, eat, and discover side by side was incredibly rewarding.”

The event was made possible thanks to the dedication of many. Volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the day rolled smoothly, and the EOAN is deeply grateful for their energy and commitment. A special thanks also goes to EOAN’s board members, who contributed in multiple ways from helping with logistics, to volunteering on the day, to welcoming visitors at their own stops during the tour.

The celebration stretched beyond the meal itself. On the day before the feast, participants explored Eastern Ontario through a self-guided tour of local farms, cafés, and food businesses. Each stop opened its doors to visitors and contributed an item to a basket of local goods. Guests who collected stamps along the way and shared their cards online were entered into a draw, with one grand prize basket worth 1 000$ to be awarded to Josée Montpetit-Ozen!

EOAN extends heartfelt thanks to all the participating locations for their generosity and hospitality and reminds everyone that while the official tour has ended, most of these wonderful places can still be visited during their regular hours.

Finally, this weekend would not have been possible without the support of our partners Desjardins, ByWard Market District Authority and Beau’s Brewing and the generous funding provided through grants from Experience Ontario and Cornwall Tourism.

‘’The turnout was great this year. We’re very happy the weather was on our side for visitors to fully enjoy all the sites had to offer. It was so lovely to see such a vibrant group for the farm to table meal. The first of many more to come in Eastern Ontario!’’ Sylviane Dutrisac, President of the EOAN.
