Meet the Team Behind My Nordic Garden
Eric brings over a decade of experience in welding and fitting across Ireland, Germany, and Canada. His journey took him from working on a dairy farm in Ireland to refining his skills in stainless steel TIG welding. His love for building and creating with metal and wood now translates into crafting customized cedar raised beds, trellises, benches, gates, and fences for your garden. Eric is passionate about enhancing your garden space and is eager to show you the endless possibilities.
Eric is currently enrolled in a therapeutic horticulture program run by the University of North Carolina in conjunction with the North Carolina Botanical Gardens. He believes that if people and communities were to start growing their own food, not only would they enjoy more nutritious produce, but this shift would reduce dependency on commercial agriculture, lowering carbon footprints due to decreased transportation and packaging needs.
Communities would become more resilient and self-sufficient, fostering a sense of togetherness and shared purpose. Household expenses on groceries would decrease, offering financial relief to families. Additionally, gardening would provide a therapeutic and rewarding hobby, improving mental well-being. Overall, widespread home and community vegetable gardening would contribute to a more sustainable, healthy, and connected society.
Through these courses, Eric has learned a creative approach to therapy. Along with a peer, they have the idea to de-stigmatize therapy by creating a therapeutic environment that feels more like a collaborative effort, greatly enhancing the healing experience. They aim to foster a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose where individuals feel supported and encouraged by one another. Shifting the therapeutic focus from clinical to communal, they invite participants to engage in a meaningful and enjoyable experience that promotes both emotional well-being and personal growth.
Ines, a garden coach and designer, has deep roots in gardening, having grown up surrounded by lush greenery. With a background in biology and geography, she shifted from teaching to hands-on gardening in Germany and Ireland. Certified as a Gardenary Garden Consultant in 2021, Ines is committed to making gardening accessible and enjoyable. She integrates edible landscapes, food forests, and pollinator gardens into your kitchen garden, aiming to create beautiful and productive green oases. Ines is here to support you at every stage of your garden development and share her passion through insightful blog posts.
Ines continues to fulfill all her original intentions but has also expanded and grown over the past four years. She has become much more involved in Gardenary and is now one of the top coaches. As well as teaching people how to start and maintain a kitchen garden, she coaches others to run similar businesses. Through these programs, she intends for more people to start gardening businesses, leading to greater awareness globally.
An Evolving Mission
When Eric and Ines started My Nordic Garden, their goal was to make gardening commonplace again, empowering families to cultivate naturally balanced gardens with increased biodiversity, eliminating the need for chemicals. Their aim was to achieve this primarily by spreading awareness and helping those with a genuine interest in health and the environment get started.
Over the past four years, My Nordic Garden has expanded into new areas to convey more of the therapeutic aspects of gardening.
Community and Future Projects
My Nordic Garden has been working with others in and around the Ottawa area who have established successful community gardens. Currently, they are working on a proposal to run a program in their own area where they can put into practice everything they have learned over the past years. They truly believe that by getting back to our roots, many of the social, health, and environmental issues we face today can start to be addressed, provided there are enough people to support the cause.
